Tech Startups and the Hiring Challenges Associated with Rapid Growth

Let me take a stab at it.  It’s Monday morning, you are coming off a weekend high due to your company just securing stacks of VC cash last week (which you heard rumors a month ago was going to happen), and your boss calls you into her office.

Boss: “Hey, so about all those hires we need to make. We have the money to open up reqs for sales, marketing, business development…how is our pipeline looking!”

You: “Uhhhh…, it’s going well.”

Boss: “Great, I want to see candidate pipeline reports daily. After all, the longer it takes to hire, the longer it will take for the VCs to see an ROI.”

You: “Sounds good.” (Fear and shaking in your voice)

Think of it this way, it takes on average 52 days to fill most positions, though the top candidates are only on the market for 10 days, according to Bersin by Deloitte. If you do not have a team working for you actively banging the street to fill the candidate pipeline, chances are, you are going to lose those candidates.

Finding the best talent takes an enormous amount of time, which most start-ups don’t have the resources to properly invest (other than capital).
